George E. Eyre & William Spottiswoode • London • 1864 • Victorian Anglican Devotional Volume

A Distinguished Victorian Devotional Volume

An authentic 1864 Victorian Anglican Church Services volume, printed in London by George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode, Printers to the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty.

This beautifully volume brings together several important components of Anglican devotional and liturgical life, including the Book of Common Prayer, the New Testament, and the New Version of the Psalms of David by N. Brady and N. Tate.

Its most distinctive visual feature is the original deep brown morocco leather binding, decorated with elegant blind-stamped geometric borders and a prominent IHS Christogram on the front board.

Signature Highlight

The original full-morocco binding is particularly attractive. The richly grained brown leather retains its period character and features an elegantly stamped IHS Christogram, surrounded by decorative blind-stamped borders.

The spine retains its five raised bands and original gilt lettering, giving the little volume a refined Victorian appearance.

Condition

Completeness: Appears complete, with the contents present and accounted for.

Interior: Very good antiquarian condition. The text block is clean and sound, with no observed foxing, rips, or tears. Some pages exhibit dark, blackish age-toning along portions of the margins, consistent with natural paper oxidation and age.

Binding: The original morocco leather remains attractive and well preserved, with only light shelf wear, minor scuffing around portions of the spine joints, and gentle rounding at the corners. There are no significant losses to the leather.

Spine: Five raised bands remain defined, with weathered gilt lettering still visible.

Structure: The inner hinge papers remain intact. There is mild separation between the text block and spine lining. One page has become loose from the binding but remains present. Both boards remain fully attached.

Curator's Observation

Small Victorian devotional volumes such as this were designed to accompany their owners in daily religious life, making surviving examples especially interesting when their original character and binding remain intact.

This volume is particularly distinguished by its combination of compact devotional format, Anglican liturgical contents, original morocco binding, IHS decoration, and period gilt edges.

The interior remains remarkably clean for a book more than 160 years old, while the modest structural issues are consistent with the age and use of an original Victorian volume. Rather than presenting a heavily restored object, this example retains the honest character of its period construction and preservation.
