DESCRIPTION

Offered here is an authentic 1682 First Edition large-folio unit from the works of John Lightfoot, preserving the complete historical text devoted to the Years of Christ XXXV, XXXVI, and XXXVII.

John Lightfoot was a distinguished 17th-century English churchman and scholar renowned for his biblical, Hebrew, and rabbinical studies. His historical work brings together Christian chronology, Jewish history, and Roman history in an extensive examination of the world surrounding the New Testament.

This substantial unit follows the historical narrative across three consecutive years, including discussions of Christian, Jewish, and Roman history during the reign of Emperor Tiberius.

VISUAL & TYPOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS

The unit contains prominent sectional title layouts featuring double-bordered typographical frames, including the opening title page for the Year XXXV at page 801 and the Year XXXVII title page at page 813.

The text is printed in an impressive large-folio format on substantial handmade rag paper, featuring bold 17th-century typography, generous margins, side-margin scriptural references, and original printer's catchwords.

The pages measure approximately 9½" × 14¾", providing an excellent representation of the scale and physical character of late-17th-century scholarly folio printing.

ORIGINAL 17TH-CENTURY PRINTING ERROR

This unit contains an unusual 17th-century printing error in the pagination.

Within the sequence beginning around pages 801–812, the printed page numbers are incorrectly arranged and include duplicated numbering. The numerals themselves are original printed type and show no evidence of later alteration.

Despite the pagination error, the printed text and printer's catchwords continue through the sequence, preserving the historical narrative without loss of content.

The error remains an original physical characteristic of the 1682 printing and has not been corrected or altered.

CONDITION

Overall Condition: Good to Very Good for large-folio material dating to 1682.

The unit consists of a substantial conjoined bound section covering the Years of Christ XXXV through XXXVII. The opening folio leaf containing pages 801 and 802 is completely loose and detached from the main bound block, while the remaining sheets are substantially retained together.

A few leaves display minor, scattered dog-ear folds affecting limited portions of the upper and lower margin corners.

There is light historic damp-staining and generalized age-toning along portions of the outer margins. The moisture discoloration is dry and stable and remains largely confined to the margins, away from the primary body of text.

This particular run is free of modern annotations, ink stamps, and text highlighting.

The condition notes above reflect observations made during examination; the accompanying photographs provide the collector with the opportunity to examine the material and make their own assessment of condition.

A SUBSTANTIAL SURVIVING FOLIO UNIT

This offering preserves a complete historical unit covering three consecutive Years of Christ, rather than an isolated individual leaf.

The unusual pagination error is also visible in the accompanying photographs, allowing the collector to see this distinctive feature of the original 1682 printing firsthand.
