1663 Latin Vulgate Bible — Ornate Gilt Calf
1663 Biblia Sacra — Latin Vulgate with Ornate Gilt Calf Binding
Lyon, France • 1663 • Latin Vulgate • Jacques Carteron
Biblia Sacra, Vulgatae Editionis • Octavo • Ornate Calf Binding
A Seventeenth-Century Latin Vulgate
Offered is an authentic 1663 Biblia Sacra, Vulgatae Editionis, printed in Lyon, France (Lugduni) and associated with the editorial work of Jacques Carteron.
The volume presents the Clementine Vulgate in traditional two-column Latin typography, with decorative woodcut tailpieces and the distinctive appearance of early modern printing, including the historic use of the long s.
Additional Biblical Material & Index
The volume preserves additional material found at the conclusion of the biblical text, including Oratio Manassæ (Prayer of Manasseh) and Liber Esdræ Tertius (3 Esdras).
These sections are followed by a comprehensive Index Biblicus, providing an extensive reference component to the volume.
Ornate Calf Binding
The Bible is housed in a substantial calf leather binding featuring extensive gilt tooling across both covers and spine.
The elaborate decoration gives the binding a particularly striking appearance, while the heavy boards provide a substantial presence appropriate to the volume.
The interior retains its original or early combed, or “coster,” marbled paper endpapers, adding another distinctive decorative feature.
Completeness & Condition
The volume has been carefully examined and is complete in its contents with the exception of the main title page, which is missing. The remaining biblical text, supplementary material, and Index Biblicus are present.
Approximately the first eight pages contain wormholes, localized to the opening portion of the volume.
The pages are generally clean and free from foxing, with some light yellow toning in areas.
The text block remains structurally stable, and the substantial calf binding is intact and securely supports the volume.
The missing title page and localized worm damage are the principal condition issues.
Please examine all photographs carefully to assess the binding, gilt decoration, marbled endpapers, pages, and areas of worm damage.
