1821 King James Bible with Hidden Double Fore-Edge Paintings
1821 King James Bible with Hidden Double Fore-Edge Paintings
Sir D. Hunter Blair & J. Bruce • Edinburgh • 1821 • Original Case
A beautifully preserved 1821 King James Bible published by Sir D. Hunter Blair & J. Bruce of Edinburgh, presented in its original case and featuring two hidden fore-edge paintings—a distinctive decorative feature that is revealed when the pages are carefully fanned.
This handsome early 19th-century compact Bible has been exceptionally well preserved for its age. The original case remains in pristine condition, while the Bible itself shows only light, normal age-related wear. The text block is remarkably clean and crisp, with no rips or significant damage observed. There is a small amount of foxing around the main title page, consistent with the age of the volume, while the remainder of the pages remain notably clean.
The hidden fore-edge paintings are among the most captivating features of this volume. When the pages are fanned, the painted scenes appear along the fore-edge and then disappear when the book is returned to its normal position—a remarkable example of the decorative craftsmanship associated with fine bookmaking of the period.
The combination of its 1821 Edinburgh imprint, original presentation case, unusually well-preserved condition, and double hidden fore-edge paintings makes this an especially attractive example for collectors of antiquarian Bibles, fine bindings, and historic books.
This is more than simply an early 19th-century Bible. It is a beautifully preserved piece of bookmaking history—carefully crafted, thoughtfully preserved, and carrying nearly two centuries of history within its pages.
