DATING

No publication date is printed within the volume.

Based on its Victorian-era physical characteristics, typography, binding, and production features, this volume is conservatively presented as a 19th-century Victorian Bible rather than assigning an unsupported publication year.

FAMILY PORTRAIT GALLERY

The volume contains an original Family Portrait Gallery with thick, rigid die-cut cardboard pages designed to hold Victorian-era photographic portraits.

The portrait gallery remains completely unused and exceptionally well preserved. The decorative green and purple ornamental borders remain vibrant, and the die-cut openings show no tearing or significant deterioration.

BINDING & HARDWARE

The Bible is housed in a substantial Victorian Gothic Revival binding constructed with deeply embossed, pebble-grained leather over heavy boards.

The exterior features:

• Deeply impressed decorative leather tooling

• A prominent central decorative panel

• Heavy cast-brass protective corner pieces

• Two substantial brass hinge straps

• Original brass clasp hardware

• Brilliant gilt edges on all three outer edges

The brass corner pieces remain firmly secured, and both hinge straps are firmly anchored to the rear board.

The upper clasp remains fully functional and latches securely to its corresponding catch.

The lower clasp remains intact with its original strap, although one small closure knob/pin is missing from the clasp.

CONDITION

The main text block is complete, exceptionally clean, bright, crisp, and structurally sound.

The pages remain generally flat and straight, with no significant water damage, heavy foxing, or severe staining observed in the main text.

The original leather binding remains substantial and well preserved, with the decorative tooling and gilt edges retaining an impressive amount of their original appearance.

There is approximately 2 inches of cosmetic separation along the upper edge of the front cover. The cover remains fully attached and structurally secure, and the separation does not affect the overall integrity of the binding.

The missing closure knob/pin on the lower clasp is noted above for complete transparency.

A VOLUME OF FAMILY, FAITH & HISTORY

Large Victorian family Bibles were created to serve as more than scripture alone. Their substantial format often brought together biblical text, commentary, illustrations, maps, genealogical records, and family portrait sections within a single volume.

This example preserves that tradition particularly well, combining a substantial and richly decorated Victorian binding with an exceptionally clean interior, an unused Family Portrait Gallery, historical maps, and extensive biblical reference material.

The absence of a printed publication date is itself worth noting in the catalog record, and the volume is therefore presented conservatively as a 19th-century Victorian Bible rather than assigning a specific year without documentary evidence.
