1874 A.J. Holman Pictorial Family Bible — Sculpted Leather & Gilt Edges

$924.99Price
Quantity

A substantial Victorian-era Family Bible published by A.J. Holman & Co. in Philadelphia in 1874, featuring an impressive deeply sculpted brown leather binding, extensive gilt decoration, and brilliant gold-gilt page edges.

What makes this volume particularly appealing is its original family registry, which remains completely blank and clean. Rather than carrying generations of previous family records, this section remains open for a new family history to be recorded and preserved for generations to come.

PUBLICATION & CONTENT

Published in Philadelphia by A.J. Holman & Co., 1874, this large-format Pictorial Bible contains:

Complete Old and New Testaments

Apocrypha

Biblical Concordance

Psalms

Detailed engraved biblical maps

Numerous engraved biblical illustrations and historical imagery

The substantial format and richly illustrated contents reflect the Victorian tradition of producing Family Bibles as both religious volumes and important family heirlooms.

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES

Sculpted Leather Binding

The original brown leather binding features deeply recessed and raised sculptural decoration, creating a striking three-dimensional appearance characteristic of elaborate Victorian Bible bindings.

Brilliant Gilt Edges

All three exposed page edges retain their original bright gold gilt, providing a striking presentation when the volume is closed and reflecting the care given to its original production.

Blank Family Registry

One of the most distinctive features of this Bible is the completely blank family-record section. The pages remain clean and unused, providing an opportunity for a new owner to document marriages, births, deaths, and other important family milestones.

Engraved Maps & Illustrations

The volume contains detailed engraved biblical maps along with historical and biblical illustrations throughout.

CONDITION

The interior text block is 100% complete and remains remarkably bright and clean for a Bible dating to 1874, with virtually no heavy foxing or significant age spotting.

The first few pages show a small amount of brittleness along the outermost edges, consistent with the age of the paper. There is also some light transfer staining from illustrated plates onto facing text pages; this does not interfere with readability.

The front cover is beginning to separate along the outer leather seam but remains structurally attached and secure. The leather also shows expected minor edge wear and light chipping around portions of the corners and spine crowns.

The first flyleaf contains a vintage 19th-century presentation inscription:

“This Bible is presented to Daniel Spayde.”

This small handwritten inscription provides a tangible connection to an earlier owner and adds another layer to the volume's history.

A VICTORIAN FAMILY HEIRLOOM

With its substantial size, sculpted leather binding, brilliant gilt edges, engraved biblical imagery, and exceptionally clean interior, this 1874 A.J. Holman Family Bible offers a remarkable look into the tradition of Victorian-era religious publishing.

Its untouched family registry is especially noteworthy—not because it tells us the story of a particular family, but because it leaves that story waiting to be written.

For a collector, historian, or family seeking a meaningful heirloom, this Bible offers the opportunity to preserve a new chapter of family history within a volume that has already survived more than a century and a half.
