DESCRIPTION
Offered here is an authentic 1682 First Edition large-folio section from the works of John Lightfoot, presenting the complete historical unit devoted to The Christian, Jewish, and Roman History of the Year of Christ XXXIV (34 AD).
John Lightfoot was a distinguished 17th-century English churchman and scholar whose work brought together biblical scholarship, Jewish studies, chronology, and the historical world surrounding the New Testament.
This substantial section examines the Christian, Jewish, and Roman history associated with the thirty-fourth year of Christ, including material concerning Jewish society and the Roman Empire during the reign of Emperor Tiberius. Lightfoot's discussion demonstrates the breadth of 17th-century biblical and historical scholarship and its engagement with both biblical and classical sources.
VISUAL & TYPOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS
The dedicated title page features a prominent double-bordered typographical frame, characteristic of substantial 17th-century English scholarly printing.
Page 795 contains a striking sectional heading:
PART II: The Roman Story
This section introduces Lightfoot's discussion of the Roman historical narrative, including his examination of Velleius Paterculus.
The work is printed in an impressive large-folio format on substantial handmade rag paper, featuring bold 17th-century typography, generous margins, side-margin scriptural references, and original printer's catchwords.
At approximately 9½" × 14¾", the leaves provide an excellent representation of the scale and physical character of substantial late-17th-century scholarly printing.
CONDITION
Overall Condition: Good to Very Good, considering the age and large-folio format.
The section survives as a complete historical unit, although its leaves are in a mixed structural state. A portion remain conjoined or attached along the spine margin, while several are detached and loose.
The handmade rag paper remains physically strong and stable. The printed typography is generally bold, sharp, and highly legible.
Page 781 contains a modern collector/bookseller annotation in blue ink within the outer margin, dated January 2020.
Pages 780–782 contain localized ink underlining and circled words from a previous reader, including references such as “Abraham,” “Terah,” and “Mofes.” The remainder of the text is substantially free of markings.
There is honest age-appropriate wear throughout. A light corner crease runs through the first several pages at the upper-right corner near the page headings. A few minor dog-ear folds are present in limited areas along the lower edges.
The title page has a distinct vertical handling stain of approximately four inches along the left margin. The staining continues through the first few consecutive pages, gradually becoming lighter and less pronounced. There is also light edge-toning and sparse foxing consistent with paper of this age.
A COMPLETE HISTORICAL SECTION
Unlike an isolated individual leaf, this offering preserves a complete 23-page historical section, including its dedicated title page and the continuous printed sequence from pages 777 through 799.
The condition notes above reflect observations made during examination; the accompanying photographs provide the collector with the opportunity to conduct their own assessment of the material.
